Healthy Habits: Why starving yourself is not a good way to lose weight

Why starving yourself is not a good way to lose weight It’s been ages since you stepped on a scale. You wake up one morning and decide summer is getting close or that you have a big wedding coming up that you just have to look amazing for. If you’re a guy you may want to be able to show off toned muscles like a Hollywood star. You step on a scale and realize you have added 15 pounds since the last time you weighed yourself. It may not seem like a lot to some people but it is shocking to you. The pounds added up in 2 months! How can this be? Maybe there is something wrong with your scale. You start thinking about it and realize you have a good excuse. Life has been hectic. You may have started stress eating without paying attention. You may have had a crazy college semester or a turbulent couple of months at work. You just have not had the luxury of time. Time to pay attention. Time to care about yourself or time to even think about working out. It’s not your fault, it’s just

Two Healthy Avocado Sandwiches and Homemade Ginger tea: A way to help Millennials "save for a home."- Sizzle Drizzle recipes

I remember the first time I told a college classmate that I loved avocado on bread. Her reaction was "that sounds weird." Some other people in earshot of the conversation also gave me strange looks. I actually had never heard of an avocado sandwich at that time but now eating avocado toasts or sandwiches is a major trend. Avocados are highly nutritious, containing 20 essential nutrients, so I consider their rise in popularity a good thing.  According to the Washington Post, the rise of the avocado in America began in 2015.  I have inserted a link here to the Washington Post article: " The rise of the avocado, America's new favorite fruit ."  This year, 2017, avocados are still popular enough to cause an uproar on social media (read tweets  here ) in response to millionaire Tim Gurner's statement during an interview on 60 minutes. He spoke about Millenial Australians not being able to buy houses because they are unemployed and spend "forty dollars a day

Stubborn Optimism

If today is not great, tomorrow will be better; If tomorrow is just sad  Next week will be looking up, If next week is bleak, Next month the sun will shine If next  month is gloomy  Maybe wait till next year  I mused over these words recently after they just fell into my head. Resilience is a great quality to possess, so is tenacity. To really be consistently positive, optimism must be stubbornly clung to. Some may say that the train of thought above is a little naive. I can understand this line of thought but without hope the things life throws at us could easily sink our emotional ships, blissfully sailing in carefree seas. I wrote a blog post about Job a few months ago and while looking at the topic of hope in a bible search I realized that Job, who had a very bleak experience in life, spoke so much about hope. Hmm,....way to hold on Job! He said, "At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not f

The existential crisis of Job: The search for meaning

The phrase " existential crisis" may sound deep and far fetched to you so lets use Job's story to set it up. Let's introduce Job, a wealthy man with kids who do what most rich kids do, they party. He has lots of land. Set up a large farm in your  mind and add some 7000 sheep, 3000 camels, 1000 oxen  and 500 female donkeys. You need a lot of land to hold all those animals! He is a man with so much integrity that one book of the bible is dedicated to him. The question is why did he have so many trials? Everything went wrong in Job's life, yes e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. It all started with something he could not see in Job chapter 1. God boasts about Job and Satan tells God that the only reason Job serves him is because of the things God does for him.  His proposition is for God to let him , Satan, switch things around so that Job would curse God. God agrees but states that Satan cannot take Job's life.                  Alas, Job loses everything, his kids, his
